What are exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny particles—like nano delivery services—released by almost all the cells in our body. These vesicles are extremely small, typically measuring between 30 and 150 nm, which allows them to move easily throughout the body. Their main role is cell-to-cell communication, acting as messengers that carry important “cargo.” This cargo is biologically active and includes crucial molecules such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, including microRNAs, which regulate gene expression.

How do exosomes work?

Exosomes function as highly targeted information packages. Exosomes derived from stem cells retain the ability to replicate virtually all therapeutic activities of the source cells. Their small size is a key advantage: it enables them to travel throughout the body, cross biological barriers (including the barrier that protects the brain), and deliver their contents directly to damaged cells, modifying their function. Once they reach the recipient cell, the exosomal content modulates that cell’s internal pathways, transferring information or molecules that assist in repair. This strategy is so promising that many experts consider it the “second generation” of regenerative medicine.

What can they contribute to my health?

Therapy based on stem cell–derived exosomes offers significant benefits because it combines the therapeutic virtues of stem cells with a high safety margin: they carry a low risk of immune rejection and do not self-replicate, eliminating the risk of tumor formation. Therapeutically, exosomes support tissue regeneration (such as healing chronic ulcers and wounds, reducing scarring, and treating alopecia), have powerful anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties that help control imbalance in autoimmune diseases (such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupus), and offer meaningful neuroprotective potential by reducing oxidative stress and promoting neuronal vitality. They are being investigated for managing aging and neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and spinal trauma.
